Faith Taylor: A Tribute to a Lifetime of Dedication and Passion in Racing
In the illustrious world of New Zealand Thoroughbred breeding, few names resonate with as much reverence and admiration as Faith Taylor. Named the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeder’s Personality of the Year 2024, Faith’s journey through the equestrian world is as storied as it is inspirational.
Born into a lineage steeped in racing history, Faith’s roots trace back through generations of dedicated horsemen and women. Raised on Otairi Station in Rangitiki, Faith inherited not only a love for horses but also a deep-seated passion for the racing industry. Her family’s involvement laid the foundation upon which Faith would build her own remarkable legacy.
In 1980, Faith and Keith purchased Waimanu, a picturesque farm in Otaki, where they established their breeding operations. Here, they nurtured their passion for racing, supporting young trainers like John Sargent and Mike Moroney, who would later achieve Group victories under Faith’s patronage. These successes paved the way for Josette Nicole, a Group 2 winner who became one of the foundation mares at Trelawney Stud after Faith and Keith bought the farm from the Holmes A’Court family in 1993.
Faith and Keith’s vision expanded with the acquisition of Trelawney Stud in 1993, where they brought Brent in to manage the farm under their guidance. Despite Keith’s untimely passing in 1997, Faith continued to steer Trelawney towards greatness, guided by her unwavering passion for breeding and racing. Trelawney Stud has cemented its legacy as a producer of high-class horses and an iconic position in New Zealand Thoroughbred history.
Faith has remained actively involved in breeding and racing at Trelawney and today. Her dedication and keen eye for talent are reflected in the horses she owns shares in, including Sancerre, the dam of Pride of Jenni, currently rated as one of the best race mares in the world. Faith’s contributions extend far beyond the track and farm. Her philanthropic efforts have touched countless lives, supporting causes such as cancer research (Malaghan Institute), equestrian sports (Riding for the Disabled), ecological conservation, and the arts. Faith’s quiet generosity and dedication have inspired a new generation of industry leaders.
Established in 1992, the Personality of the Year Award recognizes an industry personality who has made a significant contribution to the New Zealand Thoroughbred industry. Faith Taylor’s recognition in 2024 stands as a testament to her unwavering dedication, leadership, and profound impact on the racing community. Her legacy will continue to inspire and uplift, ensuring that her influence on the industry and beyond will endure for generations to come.
Faith Taylor has provided scholarships to over 20 students at the Irish National Stud, nurturing talent that promises to shape the future of New Zealand’s racing heritage.
Faith Taylor is immensely proud of her three children, Andrew, Brent, and Jane, as well as her five granddaughters and two great-grandsons. Their support and encouragement have been pivotal throughout her career, reflecting a family bond that complements Faith’s passion for horses and racing, enriching her life's work with deep personal fulfillment.
It's worth noting that Faith's daughter-in-law, Cherry Taylor, also received this prestigious award in 2002, further solidifying the Taylor family's profound impact on New Zealand Thoroughbred breeding and racing.
