Trelawney are sad to announce the passing of popular broodmare Ruud Van Slaats.
A daughter of Van Nistelrooy and Quintella, Ruud Van Slaats was bred by Trelawney Stud and went on to win five of her 20 starts including the Gr.2 Cal Isuzu Stakes and Gr.2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes and placed on a further six occasions, twice at Group One level.
Well known for her kind nature, Ruud Van Slaats proved a success at stud with her yearlings offered at auction all selling for six figures, headed by Oceana Blue (Ocean Park) as the top priced at $450,000 when knocked down to Peter Moody in 2020.
From her seven foals to race, Ruud Van Slaats has had five winners including the stakes performers Smashing (Pins), Savvan (Savabeel) and Oceans Fourteen (Ocean Park).
Fittingly her 4-year-old daughter Oceana Blue won at Sandown on Wednesday, racing in the colours of Judy Wanless.
There is more to come from Ruud Van Slaats’ progeny with a Super Seth colt to be offered at Karaka 2023 and a Super Seth filly born earlier this season.
“Ruud Van Slaats was one of our favourite mares,” Cherry Taylor said. “She was such a brave and determined racehorse and as broodmare had a beautiful personality. We will all miss her.”
Ruud Van Slaats' legacy will continue through her six-time winning daughter Smashing who is a valued member of the Trelawney Stud broodmare band. Smashing’s first foal is an unraced three-year-old Sebring filly, she has a Savabeel yearling colt and foaled a Savabeel filly this season.
